Business With A Twist Wednesday, November 24, 2010
BUSINESS WITH A TWIST NOVEMBER 24, 2010
The SDBA’s Business With a Twist was a wonderful evening at the SC Arts Centre, filled with lots of networking, great ideas, and delicious food provided by Sergio’s. There were five businesses that had table displays – Sechelt Sign and Trophy, Discovery Retreat, Artworks Tours and Framing, 4Cats Art Studio and Norris HR Advisory Services.
The guest speaker was Ken Kelly, General Manager of the Downtown Victoria Business Association presenting “Sechelt, Sunshine and Success”. He had some wonderful things to say about the SDBA, including expressing his amazement at what we manage to accomplish here in Sechelt on such a small annual budget. He told us about some of the projects he has organized in Victoria, and how these events have made the Victoria Downtown a vibrant and exciting place to be. We listened and learned, and were inspired!

Letter from President Katharine Trueman to Merchants on Cowrie Street and REGISTRATION FORM re:COMMUNITY NIGHT
To Whom It May Concern:
This is your special invitation to participate in the New Sechelt Night Market. We have set aside Thursday, August 12th as Community Night and hope you will be able to join us.

We are planning to hold a Silent Auction with receipts going to the food bank and we will also advertise to bring a food item when visiting the market that night.
For those agencies who have large vehicles (such as Ambulance, Fire Department, RCMP, and Transit) we would place you at the end of the street or in lower Cowrie depending on how many of you are able to attend.
We have attached a registration form and information form for your convenience.
We hope that we will have the opportunity to work with you on August 12 at the New Sechelt Night Market.
If you have further questions, please call our office at 604-885-9611.

About the Presentation: What prevents us from following through on the changes we want to make in our businesses or in our lives? Do we believe we can do it? Do we believe we deserve to succeed? It’s the power of our beliefs. At the Coffee and Chat gathering on April 14, Bill and Julie Astalnok, the owners of a corporate training company, Astalnok & Associates, outlined a model of how beliefs are formed and impact our behaviours and actions. They highlighted how their change processes use body centered techniques to easefully shift limiting beliefs to more energizing and inspiring beliefs. Instead of feeling stuck - Be aware and choose - Take action and make your dreams come true. Bill and Julie are passionate about assisting companies to achieve their goals. They are offering their program as a pilot to a select number of SDBA companies in exchange for development feedback. Please call Bill Astalnok at: 604-885-5632, to hear more about how this program can assist your success.

Even though Canada's Men's Olympic Hockey team was playing (and defeated the Swiss team 3-2) at the same time as the SDBA AGM, thirty eight members turned out for the event. The District of Sechelt's Mayor Inkster and Council all attended, as well as many local business people. There was a delicious dinner prepared by Jo Moore, music by Randeesh and Ken Dalgleish, a silent auction of items donated by members, magic by Gerardo Avila, and awards to acknowledge members' service to the SDBA and its committees. Guest Speaker Sandra Cunningham, District Manager, Canadian Federation of Independent Business gave an informative talk and President Katharine Trueman chaired the AGM meeting.

SDBA Business With A Twist
Date: Monday, January 18, 2009
Location: Sechelt Arts Centre, Trail at Medusa Invited: Businesses in Sechelt, and their employees
The Sechelt Downtown Business Association’s [SDBA] quarterly event, Business With a Twist, was held on January 18 at the Sechelt Arts Centre. 34 people from the local business community were in attendance to hear a very timely and important presentation about the HST [Harmonized Sales Tax] given by Robert Flux of The Coast Group Chartered Accountants. Many questions were answered, and people left with a greater understanding of the impact and implications of the HST for their businesses. There was also a presentation about the upcoming “With Glowing Hearts” Olympic Torch Relay community event to take place in Sechelt on February 4. This presentation was given by Connie Jordison of the District of Sechelt. Everyone enjoyed the food catered by Side Dish Café.
The Annual General Meeting of the SDBA will be held on February 18 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Watch for more details about this and our next Business With a Twist coming on May 19, 2010.
